It is with great pleasure we announce the naming of the South Carolina EMS Foundation Grant in honor of Albert M. Futrell, Jr., who served as the initial State EMS Director for South Carolina. Incidentally, he still holds the record for being the longest serving State Director in South Carolina. Mr. Futrell has remained a strong force for a progressive and efficient EMS System. Mr. Futrell always had a knack for resolving difficult problems in a manner that brought great resolution. He was always very personable and engaging.
He was instrumental in developing the EMS system in the early 1970’s. Furthermore, he was also responsible for the development of the initial EMS Law & Regulations in addition to the current Grant-In-Aid programs being set up and funded. Under his guidance the trauma program, data systems, quality assurance, emergency preparedness, ambulance run reports, training and compliance, ambulance licensure, grant programs and the four Regional EMS offices were realized. Mr. Futrell was actively involved in the now defunct National Association of State EMS Directors and stayed abreast of changes affecting the system.
Mr. Futrell has always been very passionate about EMS and remains actively involved in EMS even after retirement. He currently serves on the Midlands EMS Board of Directors and is also a member of the EMS Association. Moreover, he serves as chairman of the South Carolina EMS Foundation. He is responsible for many of the successes that we realize today based on our EMS system being structured on a solid foundation from the early days.
In appreciation for all his contributions to our EMS system, it is our honor and privilege for our EMS Foundation Grant to be named the Albert M. Futrell, Jr. Scholarship Grant.
