Job Opportunity: Controller
SCEMSA is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Controller to join our team in a full-time capacity. This pivotal role directly supports the financial management, grant reporting, employee onboarding, and administrative operations of the association and the SC EMS Foundation.
Position Overview
- Title: Controller
- Type: Full-Time
- Reports To: Executive Director
- Work Location: Remote/Home office with required travel throughout South Carolina for events and stakeholder engagement
Key Responsibilities

Oversee comprehensive financial accounting for SCEMSA and the SC EMS Foundation
- Supervise accounts payable and receivable; maintain strong internal controls
- Manage budgeting, reconciliations, investment reviews, cash management, audits, and tax reporting including IRS forms and 990 filings
- Assist in grant budget preparation and ensure compliance with grant financial reporting requirements
- Administer employee payroll, benefits programs (401(k), health plan), and onboarding processes
- Maintain employee payroll records and personnel files; support recruitment efforts and participate in interviews as needed
- Provide timely and accurate financial reports to executive staff, Treasurer, and Board of Directors
- Support foundation scholarship accounting and distribution
- Participate in SCEMSA events and collaborate with leadership on association initiatives
Qualifications & Skills

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent experience; CPA preferred but not required
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles
- Experience with budget preparation, federal grants, cash flow projections, and financial analysis preferred
- Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently with a professional home office setup
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships
- EMS experience appreciated but not required
