Competition Guidelines

General Information:

    • Teams will compete in regional prelims, and each licensed service is initially limited to three (3) teams, with possible expansion based on application volume.
    • Teams will be scheduled to compete in the order of registration, with no requests for specific dates or times accepted.
    • No unauthorized audio or video recording is allowed during the competition.
    • Competition committee members and judges are restricted from coaching any competing team for a minimum of two (2) years.

Team Rules:

    • Teams will consist of one paramedic and one EMT, both of whom must be certified in South Carolina and affiliated with the licensed service they represent.
    • Teams will compete in their service uniforms and are responsible for providing the required equipment, which will be inspected prior to the competition. No additional equipment is permitted.
    • In case of illness or injury, a replacement team member must be a certified paramedic or EMT from the same service, with notification required at least 24 hours before the competition.
    • Teams are responsible for providing their own equipment.

Final Competition:

    • The final competition will involve a realistic practical scenario created by the competition committee. Last year’s champion team is invited back to defend their title.
    • All teams competing in the finals will be sequestered prior to the competition. A random drawing will determine the order of competition.
    • Communication during sequestration is strictly prohibited, and failure to comply will result in disqualification.
    • The top three regional teams will advance to the final competition. Substitutions are allowed in case of illness or injury, but only with certified personnel from the same service.
    • Judging criteria will be based on both the paramedic and EMT curriculums, including the DOT Paramedic Curriculum, SC Medication Formulary, and SC-approved skills list. Judges may act as medical control during the scenario, as necessary.

The results and decisions of the competition judges are final. The competition committee reserves the right to modify rules and guidelines as needed.
